UAB, Partners Seek Safe Carbon Dioxide Storage for “Greener” Power Generation
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced plans to fund research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Engineering on technologies that would help reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the capture and permanent safe storage, or sequestration, of carbon dioxide (CO2). The project is in collaboration with Southern Company, the parent company of Alabama Power.

UAB Leads National Study on Genetic Link to End-Stage Renal Disease in Lupus Patients
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is the lead institution in a multi-site, federally funded study of the genetic risk factors for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in patients with lupus. A nearly $3.35 million Grand Opportunity grant from the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal, and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), will create a national consortium to undertake what is known as a genome-wide association study.

UAB Announces Realignment; Forming a College of Arts & Sciences
Three schools at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) – Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Natural Science and Mathematics – will merge into one College of Arts and Sciences, President Carol Z. Garrison announced today. A fourth, the School of Education, will retain its school identity as a distinct unit, but within the new college.
